E-Newsletter No 5 - November edition

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE…...

On behalf of the advisor and committee members of the multicultural student association, I like to welcome everyone to the November 2008 edition of the MSA E-Newsletter. I hope you all are having a fun and exciting fall semester. We have had new events this fall like the OKC day tour and also have a lot of fun and educational events throughout the year like the international showcase on November 20th, star links, and our various information sessions and international-domestic student dialogues. The MSA has grown a great lot from the spring with the inclusion of 50 new freshmen this fall, a whole committee set to translate English messages to major foreign languages and more domestic students with keen interests in diversity friendship and mentorship.
In conclusion, I like to thank other international organizations for their generous love and support and you, the reader for your interest in the multicultural student association.

HALLOWEEN !!

Halloween is a shortened form for ‘All Hallows Even’ The word Halloween has its origins from the Catholic Church as November 1st “All Hollows Day" (or "All Saints Day"), is a Catholic day of observance in honor of saints. But, in the 5Th century BC, in Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31. The holiday was called Samhain (sow-en), the Celtic New year, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to the earth. Traditionally sacrificial offerings were made to the gods on the appointed day each autumn to show their gratitude for a successful harvest and sustenance for another year. The ensuing feast, part ritual and part seasonal blow-out, usually culminated in a communal banquet with music, dancing, and harvest decor. Commonly harvest festivals were held on or about the arrival of the "harvest moon," the full moon occurring closest to the autumnal equinox in what is now the month of September. Samhain, the Celtic harvest festival thought to be the forerunner of Halloween, was an exception to that rule, taking place instead on what the Celts regarded as the last day of summer, October 31.
Jack O'Lantern is a practice which has been going on for centuries in which people carve a pumpkin during Halloween. The legend behind it is that an Irishman named Jack O’Lantern tricked the Devil into promising him that he wouldn’t go to hell for his sins. When Jack died he learned that he was barred from heaven also, so he went down to the gates of hell after all to beg for a final resting place. But the Devil kept his promise, dooming Jack to wander the earth for all eternity with only an ember of hell fire of to light his way, hence he was known as Jack O'Lantern.
People wear costumes on Halloween because it is believed that when ghosts come back to the earth, people thought that they would encounter ghosts if they left their homes. To avoid being recognized by these ghosts, people wear masks when they leave their homes after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits. On Halloween, to keep ghosts away from their houses, people would place bowls of food outside their homes to appease the ghosts and prevent them from attempting to enter. The distribution of soul cakes was encouraged by the church as a way to replace the ancient practice of leaving food and wine for roaming spirits. The practice, which was referred to as "going a-souling" was eventually taken up by children who would visit the houses in their neighborhood and be given ale, food, and money.
Today, Americans spend an estimated $6.9 billion annually on Halloween, making it the country's second largest commercial holiday.

M A T C H E S

If people can give their time to listen carefully, horrible life events can be avoided. On June 29, 2000, on my birthday, I decided to do something special for that day. I called up my best friend to accompany me so that I could give a donation at the Mental Health Hospital. However, he had a busy day, so I drove my car to the Nusantara Mental Hospital, Surabaya in the morning. When I went to the hospital, I walked from the parking lot to the main door of the hospital. I met a nurse at the reception to give my donation for the patients. I asked the nurse to allow me to look around because that was my first time in a Mental Health Hospital.
The hospital had four white buildings, one main building that I just came in, and three other buildings for the patients. While I walked to the one of three building, I was getting the smell of disinfectant all around me. I entered the first building with a nurse. She explained to me that the first building was for the patients whose illness was not serious and who could be healed. I saw many patients as there talking, crying, and playing by themselves. Suddenly, I focused on a man who held matches in his hand and looked outside the window. Every time the matches fell down, he always picked them up and he returned them back to the same position. Because I was curious, I asked the nurse what happened with the patient. The nurse narrated the touching story behind the curious man which I will never forget and want to share it with you.
He had a family of three in Jakarta Indonesia. He was a rich businessman who was very busy. Every day after he returned back home, he had just had one hour to spend with his family for dinner and play with his three year old son. After about an hour, he went to his room to continue on with his job. Unlike him, the wife was an understanding woman. She spent her entire day with her son. Although her husband was rarely at home, as he did not have much time, he still loved his family.
One day, when he returned back home, he had his dinner by himself without his wife. After that, he grasped his laptop and returned back to his work in his room. The wife asked him to take care of their son because she wanted to take a shower.“John, are you busy today? Can you go to the family room to take care of David for a moment? I want to take my shower.”
“Ok….ok!!! Just one second. I will bring my laptop and work near David.”
While his wife was taking a shower, he was continuing with his job near David.
“Hey David, do not take my paper. Daddy is still busy. Play with your toys over there.”
The second time, his son tried to invite his father to play with him, but
“No!! David. Daddy is still busy. You can play with my matches. Here you go!”
As David was playing with the matches, his mother had not yet finished taking her shower.
“John, what is David doing?” “He is playing with my matches.”
“What??? Why do you give him your matches? David can eat it. Take them away out from him!”
“It is OK! I am monitoring him as he is playing near me.”
After the wife asked the husband three times to take the matches from their son, and the husband did not want to listen to his wife, suddenly their son caught fire and burned his face and body. The husband threw out his laptop and he screamed to his wife to help him because their son was crying loudly. After the wife looked at their son, she could not say anything, as she was crying. The husband tried to call an ambulance and bring him to the hospital. However, when they were on their way to go the emergency, their son became quiet, and his body froze like ice. Before they arrived to the hospital, their son had passed away. The mother also passed away a month later after her son because she was heartbroken, the husband was the man who was in the mental hospital standing with the matches in his hand.
The story has changed my behavior. When my father calls me to do something, the first time I would say, “Later La,” And try to procrastinate, but after I heard this story, I always attend to my father.

Listening is important in people’s lives because listening can change their lives for the better.

My name is Ana Todorova and I will be a senior at OCU. I am from Bulgaria and I am among the four Bulgarians on campus. I think now this is one of the biggest cultural events going on not only on OCU campus but also worldwide is Ramadan.
I believe that this is a wonderful holiday, which lasts one month, and is essentially praying and focusing on God as well as fasting in all ways possible: refraining from food, water, lustful thoughts, smoking and alcohol between sunrise and sunset. Then they break the fast.

I think that the closest holiday we have in Christianity is the month of fasting right before Easter. However, we do not go all day without food and water. For them it means they can experience for a day what millions of people worldwide experience every day. This makes Muslim people more charitable, appeases them and is so educative. On the last day of Ramadan there is another holiday called Eed, which is a big break-the-fast event, with lots of food and both women and men can sit together and eat.
To bring this event closer to the OCU community, I want to tell everyone not to be too harsh on Saudi People here, for example. During the day they look tired and not very focused. This is because of Ramadan, so professors, classmates, friends – understand why!

Ramadan Kareem to all of you, Muslim people at OCU.

Through the food fair

I have participated in the International Food Fair twice. The first time, I attended I helped the Japanese Association serving food. It was so much fun to serve food to people from around the world saying hello and explaining what the food was. Some people talked to me in Japanese. It is really neat to see people from around the world at one place. On my second time, I actually cooked the food. My friends and I cooked sushi, it was a lot of work since we used whole rice package. We cooked from 10pm to 2am, can you imagine you cook for 4 hours rolling sushi? It was hard, but exciting too at the same time. Sushi was a big success, because all food on our booth was gone before the event was closed. People liked sushi so much!!This year, as my third time of the participation, I helped organizing the event as a member of MSA. I made sure that all the booths from different countries (9 groups!) were doing well, and it gave me another chance to talk to them. The past two years, I talked with the customers, but this year I got to talk to the participants and they were all great! They were passionate to represent the food of their mother country, and all food was delicious and beautiful! When I attend multicultural event, I like to talk to people from different countries, because I learn something from them. I like OCU’s International Food Fair because people are all so friendly! Through the Food Fair, I met many good people and I just love this kind of event; meet new friends! And of course, every time I attend the Food Fair, I find new “favorite” food!

The President's Corner

Ladies and Gents,The International Food Fair was a huge success! We had such a great mixture of cultures, nationalities, ages, etc... Talk about the OCU melting pot.A special thanks to all the participants, judges, friends, and our advisor Clint Normore for all your help and dedication towards the food fair.Student Association (MSA). Furthermore, I am glad and thankful to see the continuous support of the OCU community towards the Multicultural Student Association (MSA). Lastly, while reading, I came across this quote and I would like to share it with you, “diversity is the one true thing we all have in common. Celebrate it every day.” I tried to find the author, but all my efforts ended in anonymous. Yet, the value of its words is worth remembering.

would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you that participated in the International Food Fair 2008. We had such a great turn out this year. I know this event would not have been as success without all of your help. Thank you for actively supporting the Multicultural Student Association (MSA) events. The International Food Fair is a great opportunity for everyone on campus as well as the local community to taste delicious foods from various parts of the world without having the hassle of travelling. This also shows how diverse the OCU campus is and its cultural diversity is what makes it so unique.I enjoy MSA events because it gives the International Students a chance to showcase their culture and talents to the domestic students and the local community here in Oklahoma City. On top of that, I hope that we as international students can enrich the learning experience on campus by bringing and sharing our culture from all over the world.Stay in tune with MSA for more upcoming events!

have always wanted to have an African table at the international food fair, but I did not know how or what to do, in order to make it possible. However I gained the courage, to make it happen, when the president of MSA (José Andrade) told me about his interest in having an African table participating in the 2008 international food fair. It was a little hard trying to find people to commit to this; but in the end I was successful in getting people from Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal and Ghana to represent Africa.I must say that the international food fair was uniquely and successfully done. For the first time in three years we had representatives from Sweden, Saudi Arabia, and Africa. I know this is just the beginning of good things to come for MSA and I cannot wait for next year's food fair which will be twice as big as this year's food fair. Who knows what new countries will be represented in that one.

The idea of MSA e-newsletter

It is not a easy to start a new thing, but we did it! From this semester, MSA Newsletter started to publish on blog. There are 1,000 more people has watched our e-newsletter. In the past, we just published 200 newsletter in one term. I am happy to see more OCU students and read it. That is also our purpose: make newsletter more interesting and attract more students to read it. No matter where they are, even students are in other countries, they still can know what happen in OCU campus via internet.

We also try to do something new. Like cover people, we interview international students and let them talk about the life in OCU campus. In this term, I use MSA Executive Members to be the cover people. Out executive members did a lot of things and spent a lot of time for MSA. In the end of this semester, I wanna say : “ we really did a good job, thank you everybody.”

E-Newsletter NO.02

Cover people -- Girija R. Chavan

Q: Tell us about your home town.
I will tell you about my hometown in India. It is named Satara-State Maharashtra, India. It is located in the west central part of India surrounded by beautiful mountains. It is not a big city, but it is a scenic city, and is a tourist attraction. The weather is moderate and pleasant.

Q: What countries you have ever been?
I travelled to Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. I like Jimtin Island Malay, they have the longest ropeway in the world which was fun to ride. I like the Singapore zoo. The night safari was exciting since we could see all the animals being active. Petronas Twin Towers was a marvelous site and an engineering masterpiece.

Q: Tell us about your first impression of America?
My first experience of American was not really good. I joined the school late, and was unable to find an apartment to live in and I did not have any friends. I finally found an apartment to live in, but there were a lot of bed bugs there, and I got so many bites from those bugs, I suffered a lot. That was terrible for me. I had to get treated for the bug bites from the campus health center. I finally managed to get out of the apartment even though the manager of the apartment did not allow me to break the leasing contract. Now life has settled and I have a new apartment that is much nicer, plus a car to drive with good friends as well.
Q: What will you do after graduation?
I will go back to India to visit my family and friends. I hope to find a job in United States, because I will eventually start my own business selling Indian handicraft and home decorating items in the states.

Q: Why do you want to have your own business?
I want to be independent. I am planning to open a handicraft business, and want to help the artists who make the handmade products in India. A couple of groups I know have their small household productions, but they do not have a good market for which to sell. Setting up the business will not only profit me but will also give back to those who deserve to have some value for their handmade products.

OCU is a Multicultural Society

OCU is a multicultural society; we have students from all parts of the world and being a part of this society has helped me learn more about different traditions and cultures. What I find most special about being in Multicultural Students Association (MSA) is that along with learning from others, I also get to share a bit of my life and where I come from through such organizations as the MSA. This is what MSA is all about.

In the MSA, we come together from different nationalities to becoming one people. We do this through sharing, as well as by learning from one another. Being a part of MSA has helped me to realize that despite the fact that we are all from different countries, we all share similar beliefs and passions. I've also met some of my very good friends through being an active member of MSA. I feel at home being a part of the MSA family. This is why I want to let all of the International Students who feel homesick to know that you are not alone and there is a home away from home and you can find it here in the Multicultural Students Association at OCU.

Kay's Spring Break Trip

It was obviously true that I personally had been so excited about going to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon during the spring break with some of my church friends. The Grand Canyon, the spot that I had been eager to step on with my feet since I was a little boy, was selected as one of the most favorite tourist spots. So when I heard about going there from one of my friends, there was no doubt that I would be up for it. Although it took more than eighteen hours from Oklahoma City to Las Vegas by car, I was not that tired. That was because I had been very excited to see the grand landscape with my two eyes. We arrived that afternoon to the main strip in Las Vegas after we had driven directly all the way from Oklahoma. We watched many different kinds of shows which were very fantastic and exciting, and had a lot of fun walking and looking around the main street for three days. Well, one of funniest experiences I had was that I enjoyed playing the slot machines to make big money. Unfortunately, I lost the money I invested gambling at the casino. That was the first time I had enjoyed gambling, but I think it was fun and a good experience for me though.

We had spent a wonderful three days in Las Vegas and had left there to go to the Grand Canyon. When we arrived at the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas, it was about sunset. We decided to see the beautiful sunset of the Grand Canyon and so we took a shuttle bus there and went up to the best spot for viewing, called "Hoppie Point." The sunset in the Grand Canyon, in a nut shell, seemed like the creation of heaven and earth to me. I could not forget the fantastic scene I saw. That was the perfect moment when the dream of that little boy had come true. I could not keep myself from dropping my head before the greatness of nature.

One thing that I deeply realized through viewing the magnificent Grand Canyon was that God is really great and almighty! This is what I had realized the most through this trip.

Author: DRINKING ALONE WITH THE MOON
Author: Li Bai

From a pot of wine among the flowers
花間一壺酒
I drank alone. There was no one with me --
獨酌無相親
Till, raising my cup, I asked the bright moon
舉杯邀明月
To bring me my shadow and make us three.
對影成三人
Alas, the moon was unable to drink
月既不解飲
And my shadow tagged me vacantly;
影徒隨我身
But still for a while I had these friends
暫伴月將影
To cheer me through the end of spring....
行樂須及春
I sang. The moon encouraged me.
我歌月徘徊
I danced. My shadow tumbled after.
我舞影零亂
As long as I knew, we were boon companions.
醒時同交歡
And then I was drunk, and we lost one another.
醉後各分散
...Shall goodwill ever be secure?
永結無情遊
I watch the long road of the River of Stars.
相期邈雲漢

Cover People -- Renny
Hi, Renny, where are you from?
I am from the beautiful island of Taiwan (AKA Formosa). I live in Chai-Yi County and there are lots of amazing mountains including the famous Ali Mountain.

How long have you been here in the US?
I have been here about 1 1/2 year. I am working towards my MBA degree. I will go back to Taiwan to continue my family business and globalize it.

Tell us about what has been the most difficult challenge while being the US??
The most difficult challenge has been the language. International students are not comfortable with speaking in English with Americans because they feel that their English is not as good. I had to overcome this problem, I made and effort to make new friends, ask questions and speak up. If you come here do not be afraid to ask questions just speak up. YOU CAN DO IT!

Tell us about OCU:
The professors here are friendly, nice, and dedicated towards their students.
However, the teaching methods between US and Taiwan are vastly different. This made a little bit difficult for me. In Taiwan students do not ask so many questions in classes and the relationship student/professor is not as active. When I came here the professors made me feel welcome and allow me to participate in my classes. I made many new friends from different countries.
I was honor to be the President of the Taiwanese Student Association (TSA). We have big traditional festivals, parties, and many events to make the students feel at home. It was a great success to have in our events many people from various back grounds not only Taiwanese.

Renny, Are you single?
Yes, I am single. But I know I will find my Mr. Right soon.

Who is Mr. Right??
(Someone called just as we asked the question and we asked here who it was- she didn’t want tell us. Perhaps, Mr. Right???)

Thank you Renny for your time, we wish you the best of luck in the future!
No… no... Thank you guys for giving me this opportunity! It was a great experience for me, I had fun!

Jai Jan (再見) - bye, bye…

Being part of MSA

Hello, I am Yoko Hirakawa, from Tokyo Japan. I have been studying at OCU for three years and this is my senior year, I am graduating on December. After I came to OCU, time passed by so quickly! Especially as a part of MSA, there are many fun things that I have done; I would like to tell you about what I have done with MSA.

MSA has such a fun events each semester and I remember first MSA event I attended was Faces. Faces is one of the big events MSA hold, it is a international students show case that they perform dancing, singing, reading poem, pretty much everything from their own culture. It is really neat that you get to see world’s traditional entertainment on one night!

I was sophomore and I decided participating Faces as I wanted represent Japan. I performed Japanese Drum with my friend Ai, who is also Japanese, and we practiced every night before the event, it was so much fun to talk about how we should perform on the stage, and practice was just enjoyable even though we had busy schedule with classes and tests! Almost every night Ai and I practiced until midnight. And here comes the day! I never had performed in front of many people. And I was so nervous, but that night was special because I got to see my foreign friends perform as well, and my friend came to see and support me, it is just amazingly fun time! If you haven’t been to the FACES, you should go for the next time! And, you should really think about being on the stage! You don’t have to be professional as I just practiced the drum in two weeks and performed fine, and enjoying the participation is important!!!!

MSA gave me a chance to experience presenting my own culture, and I loved it.
I will save the other stories for the next time!

Have a wonderful Spring break!!!

PEOPLE EVERYWHERE

Your MSA President, Jose Andrade, asked me to write about my experiences living abroad. To be quite honest, I have struggled trying to pick a single topic to write about, because there is so much that could be said. But after about a week, I finally have chosen one.
I have now lived in Thailand for almost seven months. I have also traveled to Vietnam and Cambodia, as well as several different areas of Thailand. I have had to adjust to a completely different way of life—a new language, new food, new mindsets, new cultural rules... And it’s hard! Everything is so strange and surreal and new. You have to learn how to do so many things differently. Some days, it feels like everything has to be done differently. And yet, some things are the same—namely, people.

Despite the fact that I have had to get used to--giving a wai to people older than me, dressing in skirts and not wearing sleeveless shirts, eating spicy food that used to make me cry, not speaking in loud tones, stopping at 8AM and 6PM to show respect to the King, etc.—people are still the same as they are anywhere else. They all want to be looked at in the eyes. They all want to be respected. They all want people to listen to what they have to say. They all want to matter. And the most common characteristic--they all want to be loved.

People everywhere are the same. Now, I know this is a blatant generalization that dismisses some hugely obvious differences, but I feel that it’s important. Why? Because no matter where we are, we should always strive to find that which is the same in all of us.
So, try to do that at OCU (and everywhere else!) by reaching out to others who are seemingly very different than you, but in reality, just like you.

Christina Graves
OCU Graduate
MSA Former President

The most precious gift I have received

All of a sudden, my eyes were awaken.

I thought I apparently slept, anyway. I opened my cell-phone up that I laid by my head last night and checked what time it was as usual. It was about 3 a.m. I guess I had slept for about three hours. Unconsciously I found myself going into the memory that I had back home for about a month.

Well, this was the first time that I had been back home to my home country since I had been in the United States. For this time, I actually did not let my family know that I would come back home for a vacation, because I wanted to surprise all of them as I suddenly would appear in person. During four weeks back in Korea, my home country, many things which were very precious to me happened. These were a pleasant conversation that I had with my family, the most valuable gift I have ever received from God, and the confabulation that I had with some unceremonious friends of mine who always greet me with cheers, and the refreshing walking that I used to do with a smiling face in the park near my place, and other more good things. But, above all, if one best thing has to be selected among all these things above, I would definitely choose the first thing I mentioned without any hesitation. That is because I had an unforgettable four weeks with every single person in my family.

Even though I had a memorable time with them, I personally do not focus on something big itself that I do with them. I rather focus on what I am when we are all together in the same space itself. That is what I put a greater value on, because I think that the time I had spent with my family for about a month was so unforgettable even if it was a short period of time.

Just like an oasis in the dessert, and a shelter in hardship, they are to be the biggest blessing for me and the most beautiful gift for my life.

I really love them so much beyond description, and truly I am happy because they are in my heart all the time. I have one thing that I want to say to them right now. “You all have made me what I am. In God I love you all.”
